Belsize Park is an area situated in the London Borough of Camden, in northwest London. It is roughly located three-and-a-half miles north-west of Charing Cross in the centre of London and boasts a station on the northern line. Interestingly, the name is thought to derive from the French words for ‘well situated’ and the manor of Belsize dates back to around 1317. There are countless famous faces visible in the area such as Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin, Kate Moss, Fiona Bruce, Helena Bonham Carter and Tim Burton. Transport wise, there are four main train stations. The Belsize Park tube station is on the Northern Line as is the Chalk Famr tube states. The Swiss Cottage tube station is on the Jubilee Line whereas the Hampstead Heath station provides the London Overground service for the local residents of the area. Strangely enough however, the area is not named in the Geographers’ London Atlas but it does have several roads bearing its name such as: Belisize Avenue; Belsize Court and Belsize Mewes to name but a few. Following World War One, a great deal of the larger houses in the area were turned into flats to accommodate the rising population of the city. During World War Two a huge air raid shelter was built in the area and the entrance can still be seen.
