Finchley is a district that is located within the London Borough of Barnet. It is a primarily residential area that benefits from not one, but three town centres. It was once an ancient parish of the county of Middlesex, but became a municipal borough in 1933 and then formed part of Greater London by 1965. In the beginning of the medieval age the area now known as Finchley was one of woodland that was home to few residents. Farming in the area began in the 12th century, and in 1270 the parish church of St Mary was first recorded. By the 15th century the Finchley Common was formed, and centuries later the Edgware, Highgate and London Railway was built to reach Finchley in 1867. The district still contains the ancient Avenue House, the large Grade II listed Victorian house with its ten acres of parkland that dates back to 1859. Finchley is also home to the Sternberg Centre for Judaism that is situated within the old Manor House and functions as a Jewish cultural centre meant to facilitate Reform and Liberal Jewish institutions. The district is also home to the ten foot tall statue called The Archer as well as La Delivrance which is another of a naked woman holding a sword. It also contains a community arts centre called Artsdepot, which holds a gallery, studio and theatre and is located in the north of the district. Finchley’s first public park was opened in 1902 and is known by the name of Victoria Park, while the district’s Avenue House Grounds include ten acres of beautiful park and gardens that are visited by many and include many rare species of trees.
